NATO Secretary General briefed on operations in first visit to top Allied military command

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was briefed on operations and activities by the Alliance’s top military commander, General Philip Breedlove, during his first visit to NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium on Friday (24 October 2014). "It is vital that we can stay informed in real time about emerging crises across the world so that our military can provide us with the right advice, and we can take the right decisions,” Mr. Stoltenberg said.

The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visits Slovenia

General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visited Ljubljana, Slovenia on the 23rd October 2014. The Chairman met with the President of Slovenia, Mr. Borut Pahor, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Janko Veber, the Chief of General Staff, Brigadier General Andrej Osterman and members of the Slovenian Parliament’s Defence Committee. Among the main subjects discussed were NATO’s current security challenges, the implementation of the Readiness Action Plan, defence spending and Slovenia’s contribution to NATO’s defence initiatives, in addition to the outcomes of the recent meeting of the Military Committee Chiefs of Defence in Vilnius.

NATO Secretary General expresses shock at Ottawa attack

I am shocked and saddened by today’s shootings in Ottawa. I offer my deepest condolences to the family of the Canadian Armed Forces member who was killed today, as well as to the family of the soldier who was killed earlier this week. My thoughts are also with all those who were injured.

NATO Air Policing Fighters Intercept Russian Aircraft over the Baltic Sea

MONS, Belgium – NATO radars detected and tracked one unidentified aircraft flying in the vicinity of Allied airspace in the Baltic Sea on Tuesday, 21 October at approximately 9 a.m. CET. Fighter jets from NATO Ally Denmark (F-16) were scrambled, as were Portuguese F-16 aircraft from NATO’s Baltic Air Policing Mission in order to identify the aircraft and maintain the security of Allied air space. Non-NATO fighters from Sweden were also involved in the intercept.

NATO’s top military body visited the NATO Communications and Information Agency facilities in The Hague, Netherlands (21 October), for updates on missile defence, advanced NATO software, and the command and control aspects of the decisions made at NATO’s Wales Summit.

Deputy Secretary General calls for closer cooperation with Gulf partners

NATO Deputy Secretary General, Alexander Vershbow, spoke in favour of deepening NATO’s partnership with countries in the Gulf to ensure that “we will be even better able to respond to future security challenges”, during a speech on Sunday (19 October) at the Abu Dhabi Strategic Debate. Ambassador Vershbow said that NATO and regional partners of the Gulf should intensify political dialogue and practical cooperation; work together to strengthen maritime security and further strengthen the ability of their military forces to work together. During his speech, the Deputy Secretary General also addressed the risk the terrorist organization ISIL poses to the Middle East and beyond, including to NATO and EU member states, by saying that “dealing with this threat requires a broad, multinational effort covering a range of different measures”.

NATO Naval Drills Begin in Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean

A large fleet of naval vessels is taking part in the multinational “Noble Justification” military exercise which is underway in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. More than twenty warships, and several submarines and aircraft, are involved in the drills. "The exercise Noble Justification is a substantial opportunity for NATO to develop force integration, multinational inter-operability and enhance readiness, by using of an improved technology", said NATO's Maritime Commander, Vice Admiral Peter Hudson.

NATO and Kazakhstan mark 20 years of cooperation

A NATO delegation visited Kazakhstan from 6 to 10 October to take part in a series of public diplomacy events focusing on the 20th anniversary of cooperation with Kazakhstan within the Alliance’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) programme.
