NATO deepens cooperation with Kuwait and Gulf partners

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed closer cooperation between the Alliance, Kuwait and other Gulf partners on Tuesday (24 January 2017). During a joint press conference with First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah, the Secretary General praised Kuwait’s efforts to build greater security and stability in the Gulf region.

NATO marks closer ties with Gulf partners, opens new centre in Kuwait

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg led the North Atlantic Council in celebrating the opening of the NATO-Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Regional Centre on Tuesday (24 January 2017). During an inauguration ceremony in Kuwait, the Secretary General highlighted the Centre’s potential in strengthening the partnership between NATO and Gulf partners, including in the important fight against terrorism.

NATO inaugurates new small headquarters in Slovakia

The Alliance marked the inauguration of a new NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Slovakia on Tuesday (24 January 2017). This multinational unit is one of eight small headquarters in the eastern part of the Alliance and will play a vital role in military planning, exercises and facilitating reinforcements. In a keynote speech, NATO’s Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Tacan Ildem stressed that these eight NFIUs symbolise NATO’s solidarity and commitment to collective defence.

Secretary General: NATO has a new home in the Gulf region

In a keynote speech on Tuesday (24 January 2017), NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg marked the opening of the NATO Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Regional Centre in Kuwait. As the Alliance’s first presence in the Gulf region, the NATO-ICI Regional Centre will be a vital hub for NATO’s practical cooperation with Kuwait and other Gulf partners, as well as Saudi Arabia and Oman.

The NATO Archives marks the 60th Anniversary of the Report on Non-Military Cooperation

The end of 2016 saw the NATO Archives fully implicated with events commemorating the 60th anniversary of one of the most important texts in the history of the Alliance. Approved by the North Atlantic Council on 13 December 1956, the Report on Non-Military Cooperation in NATO is a landmark document whose principle recommendations laid the foundation for NATO’s evolution toward increased political consultation amongst its Allies.

NATO Secretary General: in times of turmoil, we need strong institutions

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stressed the importance of strong institutions and transatlantic cooperation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Thursday (19 January 2017). Mr. Stoltenberg took part in a plenary session on ‘Redefining Europe’s Security Agenda’, together with EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski, Oxford historian Margaret MacMillan and the Director of Europol, Rob Wainwright.

NATO welcomes Georgia’s reform progress

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg praised Georgia’s ongoing reform efforts on Tuesday (17 January 2017) in talks with the State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Victor Dolidze, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Dondua. The ministers met with the Secretary General before participating in a meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission.

Central Asian experts discuss energy security issues

A conference entitled “25 Years of Independence: Energy Security Issues in Central Asia and Beyond” took place in Ashgabat on 14-15 December 2016 with the participation of experts from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The event in Turkmenistan provided an opportunity to reflect on security challenges and regional cooperation strategies in particular in the energy sector.
