NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Greece for its unwavering support to the Alliance during a visit to Athens on Thursday (30 October 2014). “We thank you for all the contributions you make to our shared security,” the Secretary General said. “This commitment has been sustained despite difficult times. Throughout, Greece has remained an active and effective member of our Alliance and for over 60 years, NATO has been committed to keeping Greece safe.”

NATO tracks large-scale Russian air activity in Europe

NATO detected and monitored four groups of Russian military aircraft conducting significant military manoeuvers in European airspace over the Baltic Sea, North Sea/Atlantic Ocean, and Black Sea on 28 and 29 October 2014. These sizable Russian flights represent an unusual level of air activity over European airspace.

NATO Secretary General speech: ‘A unique Alliance with a clear course’

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg delivered a speech at the German Marshall Fund on Tuesday (28 October 2014) setting out three priorities to ensure the Alliance is able to address current and future security challenges: keeping NATO strong, working with partners to bring more stability to NATO’s neighbourhood, and keeping the bond between Europe and North America “rock solid” with Allies on both sides of the Atlantic playing their full part.

NATO’s Military Committee recognizes Montenegro’s progress in military and institutional reform

The NATO Military Committee, NATO's highest military authority, led by General Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee, visited Montenegro on 27-28 October 2014 at the invitation of the Montenegrin Chief of General Staff, Admiral Dragan Samardžić. During the visit General Bartels met with the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Mr. Milo Djukanovic, the Minister of Defence, Prof Milica Pejanovic-Djurosic PhD and the Chief of General Staff, Admiral Dragan Samardžić.

NATO Deputy Secretary General praises South Korea as a partner

NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow on Tuesday (28 October 2014) praised the Republic of Korea’s “valuable contributions” to improving international security. In a speech to the North East Asia Peace and Co-operation Initiative Forum (NAPCI) in Seoul, Ambassador Vershbow thanked the Republic, one of NATO’s global partners, for its work in Afghanistan and off the Horn of Africa.

The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visits Slovenia

General Knud Bartels, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee visited Ljubljana, Slovenia on the 23rd October 2014. The Chairman met with the President of Slovenia, Mr. Borut Pahor, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Janko Veber, the Chief of General Staff, Brigadier General Andrej Osterman and members of the Slovenian Parliament’s Defence Committee. Among the main subjects discussed were NATO’s current security challenges, the implementation of the Readiness Action Plan, defence spending and Slovenia’s contribution to NATO’s defence initiatives, in addition to the outcomes of the recent meeting of the Military Committee Chiefs of Defence in Vilnius.
