NATO celebrates 60 years of German membership

NATO is celebrating Germany’s 60th anniversary as a member of the Alliance. Ambassador Martin Erdmann, Germany’s Permanent Representative to NATO, and Wayne Bush, Assistant Secretary General for Executive Management, opened an exhibition of archival photos and documents marking the occasion at NATO headquarters on Wednesday (3 June 2015). Calling Germany’s accession “an unparalleled historic event,” Ambassador Erdmann said the move “completed the irreversible anchoring of Germany in the Western community of values”. He added, “we chart a common course, one that is guided by the compasses of freedom, democracy and the rule of law.”

Historic visit to Moldova by the NATO Partnership Committee aims to deepen partnership

The NATO Partnership and Cooperative Security Committee (PCSC) concluded on Wednesday (3 June 2015) today a 2-day visit to Moldova. Representatives from five partner countries - Austria, Ireland, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland - joined the committee, which was led by James Appathurai, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs.

NATO Secretary General begins visit to Norway

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has arrived in Norway to start a three-day visit. Today (3 June 2015), Mr. Stoltenberg is visiting Bodø Airbase in northern Norway, accompanied by Defence Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide. At Bodø, the Secretary General was briefed on Royal Norwegian Air Force capabilities, and observed a practice scramble by F-16 fighter jets.

NATO takes steps to improve financial transparency

NATO on Wednesday (3 June 2015) made public a number of key documents representing the core guidelines covering financial regulations, corporate governance and accounting principles for the Alliance. The move fulfils an agreement Allied heads of state and government made at the Wales Summit last year to enhance NATO financial transparency and accountability.

Submarine U34, COMSUBNATO visit Tallinn, Estonia

This morning the German submarine U34 joined Standing NATO Maritime Group TWO (SNMG2) and Standing NATO Mine Counter-Measures Group ONE (SNMCMG1) in Tallinn for a scheduled port visit.

Chairman of the Military Committee meets with Asia-Pacific Military Leaders during the Shangri-La Dialogue

The Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, General Knud Bartels, attended the 14th International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Asia Security Summit "The Shangri-La Dialogue 2015" in Singapore from 29 to 31st of May 2015. During the Summit, General Bartels met with defence ministers, Chiefs of Defence and security policy professionals in the Asia-Pacific region, including partners and Allies, to discuss issues of common interest and cooperation.

Poland hosts armour exercise PUMA 2015, testing interoperability and responsiveness

Exercise PUMA 2015 wrapped up in Western Poland on Friday, 29 May 2015. Exercise PUMA was a manoeuvre exercise involving Polish, US and French forces. It allowed the Allied nations to test responsiveness, interoperability enhancement, and provided them with demanding opportunities to conduct small to medium sized armour and mechanized infantry field training.

NATO Secretary General describes missile defence as transatlantic teamwork on visit to the USS Carney

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg commended the key US contribution to NATO's missile defence capability in a visit to the USS Carney, an Aegis destroyer, at Naval Station Mayport in Florida on Friday (29 May 2015). The destroyer will set sail to Rota, Spain, in September to be part of the Alliance’s ballistic missile defence system alongside three sister ships.

NATO and Tunisia take cooperation forward

The NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow welcomed Tunisia’s Prime Minister Habib Essid to NATO Headquarters on Thursday (28 May 2015) to review the partnership between NATO and Tunisia. Last year Tunisia and NATO approved an Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme focused on several priority areas, including political dialogue, cooperation in the fight against terrorism, border security, cyber defence, defence planning and management and science cooperation. The meeting today was an opportunity to discuss how to further develop the partnership between NATO and Tunisia in areas of mutual interest, including counter-terrorism and military education and training.

NATO Secretary General thanks US military personnel for their service

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked US servicemen and women during a visit to Florida and Georgia on Thursday (28 May 2015). Speaking at 125th Fighter Wing, Florida Air National Guard in Jacksonville, the Secretary General thanked them for being part of the US substantial contribution to the strength and security of the Alliance.
