Statement by the Secretary General on meeting of the NATO-Russia Council

Following consultations with the members of the NATO-Russia Council, I have invited them to a meeting at ambassadorial level. The meeting will take place on 30 March at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Allies take further steps to enhance resilience

Officials and experts from NATO Allies and partners will discuss improving national resilience against evolving security challenges at a seminar in Bucharest on 28 and 29 March 2017. NATO Heads of State and Government pledged to increase Allied resilience at the Warsaw Summit in July 2016.

NATO-EU cooperation: informal meeting between the North Atlantic Council and the Political and Security Committee

On 24 March 2017, the North Atlantic Council (NAC) and the Political and Security Committee (PSC) met to discuss NATO-EU cooperation, in particular the implementation of the Joint declaration signed by the NATO Secretary General, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission in Warsaw in July 2016, materialising in the common set of proposals endorsed by the respective Councils of both organisations in December 2016.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had talks in Budapest on Thursday (23 March) with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán. The two leaders discussed the current security situation and the Secretary General thanked the Prime Minister for Hungary’s significant contributions to NATO’s collective defence.

NATO sets date for May Meeting of NATO Leaders

NATO Allies decided this week that the next Meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of Heads of State and/or Government will take place in Brussels on 25 May 2017. The event will include an inauguration of NATO’s new Headquarters.

NATO Secretary General attends meeting of Global Coalition to Counter ISIL

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg attended a meeting of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL at the US Department of State on Wednesday (22 March 2017). Discussions focused on the military campaign against ISIL and progress on the liberation and stabilisation of Raqqa and Mosul. On the anniversary of the Brussels attacks, nations reaffirmed their shared mission to defeat ISIL.

Secretary General in Washington D.C. for Counter-ISIL talks

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with US Secretary of Defense James Mattis at the Pentagon on Tuesday (21 March 2017) to discuss enhancing NATO’s role in the fight against terrorism and preparations for the upcoming Meeting of NATO leaders in Brussels. The Secretary General is in United States to attend a meeting of the Counter-ISIL Coalition on Wednesday.

Secretary General thanks Denmark for its strong commitment to NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ended a two day visit to Denmark on Friday (17 March 2017) with talks with Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Mr. Stoltenberg thanked the Prime Minister for his country’s continued commitment to the Alliance and the two discussed NATO’s adaptation to the new security environment. The Secretary General and Prime Minister also discussed fair burden sharing in NATO and preparations for the upcoming meeting of Allied leaders in Brussels this May.
