NATO Secretary General says Ukraine crisis amplifies need to boost defence cooperation

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Tuesday (15 April 2014) that the Ukraine crisis has amplified the need to strengthen cooperation between NATO, the European Union and with close partners. “We need to train and exercise more together, for instance the NATO Response Force and the EU Battlegroups, so that we stand ready for whatever the future may bring,” the Secretary General said arriving for EU Defence Ministers talks in Luxembourg.

Secretary General urges Russia to de-escalate

If Russia is serious about its desire to de-escalate the crisis in Ukraine, it should stop blaming others for its own actions, pull back its troops, step back into line with its international obligations and start rebuilding trust, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen argues in an op-ed entitled “De-escalation starts on the ground”, published on Sunday (13 April).

Visiting Bulgaria, NATO Secretary General describes accession of new members as historic success

The NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen visited Sofia on Friday (April 11) to congratulate Bulgaria on the tenth anniversary of its accession to the Alliance. After wide-ranging talks with President Rosen Plevneliev and Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski, Mr Fogh Rasmussen said “at this time, more than ever, we realise that Bulgaria is stronger within NATO. And NATO is stronger with Bulgaria. You are making a valuable contribution to security in the vital Black Sea region, the Western Balkans, and as far as Afghanistan. And Bulgaria's membership of NATO has contributed to making our Open Door policy a success.”

NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy in Kyiv: Allies will intensify engagement with Ukrainian civil society

The Alliance will reinforce the NATO Liaison Office in Kyiv with additional experts and intensify engagement with Ukrainian civil society, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy Ambassador Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic told a conference in Kiyv. The conference Kyiv Security Forum was co-organised by the NATO Information and Documentation Centre in Ukraine. Ambassador Grabar-Kitarovic said that the Centre will be enhancing its program of outreach activities, increasing its public engagement efforts, and bolstering its support for civil society networks.

NATO Defends Accuracy of Satellite Images With Additional Proof

MONS, Belgium - Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) defends the accuracy of the images that were released to media on April 10, 2014. The dates of the images released by SHAPE were collected by the DigitalGlobe satellite 'Constellation' between late March and early April 2014. The images are unclassified and are commercially available in DigitalGlobe's public archive. SHAPE did not alter or edit the images in any way prior to release.

Active cooperation with Azerbaijan

Scientists, researchers and experts from various countries gathered in Baku on 10 April to exchange views on new initiatives and proposals to engage with NATO through science programmes and activities. Proposals touched on activities in fields ranging from energy security and cyber defence through to the promotion of the role of women in matters related to peace and security.

NATO Secretary General discusses collective defence, defence investment and Ukraine crisis in Prague

The NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen discussed the Ukraine crisis with the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Boshulav Sobotka during a visit to Prague on Thursday (10 April). “From Prague, I have this message to Russia. You have a choice. To stop blaming others for your own actions. To stop massing your troops. To stop escalating this crisis and start engaging in a genuine dialogue. If Russia is serious about a dialogue, the first step should be to pull back its troops”, the Secretary General said at a press conference with Prime Minister Sobotka.
