NATO Foreign Ministers meet in Brussels

NATO Foreign Ministers start two days of talks in Brussels on Tuesday (6 December 2016), focused on NATO’s adaptation to today’s security challenges. In the day’s first meeting – attended by EU High Representative Federica Mogherini as well as Finland and Sweden – NATO ministers are expected to agree a set of 40 concrete proposals to boost cooperation between NATO and the EU, including on so-called ‘hybrid’ threats, boosting cyber defence and working together at sea.

Defence educators discuss hybrid warfare in Ukraine

The international conference “Hybrid Warfare in Ukraine – Outcomes and Recommendations for Europe and the World” took place in Piotrkow Trybunalski (Poland) on 23 and 24 November 2016. It was jointly organised by NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP), four Polish and three Ukrainian universities.

Secretary General thanks Georgia for contributions to NATO

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili of Georgia to NATO Headquarters on Friday (2 December 2016), thanking him for Georgia’s many contributions to the Alliance. Highlighting the efforts of Allied defence experts and the work of the NATO-Georgia Joint Training Centre, Mr. Stoltenberg pledged continued support as Georgia pursues reforms which move it closer to NATO.

NATO Allies wrap up exercise Iron Sword 2016 in Lithuania

Troops from 11 NATO Allies concluded a two-week training exercise in Lithuania on Friday (2 December 2016). Dubbed “Iron Sword”, the annual exercise tested the combat readiness of participating soldiers.

KFOR inaugurates new bridge in northern Kosovo

NATO’s peacekeeping Kosovo Force (KFOR) inaugurated a new bridge in northern Kosovo on Friday (2 December 2016) to the benefit of the local population. The new bridge over the Bistrica River between the cities of Zvecan and Leposaviq will provide better traffic safety for vehicles and pedestrians. It was built on KFOR initiative with funding by NATO nations.

NATO IMS and EUMS Senior Military Officials meet to enhance EU-NATO cooperation

Lieutenant General Jan Broeks, Director General of the NATO International Military Staff (DG IMS) and Lieutenant General Esa Pulkkinen, Director General of the European Union Military Staff (DG EUMS) co-chaired the EUMS-NATO IMS Director Generals’ Conference on 29 November 16 at the EUMS Headquarters. The conference’s focus was to build on existing informal dialogue and cooperation, as well as discuss the IMS and EUMS’s role in the implementation of the NATO-EU Joint Declaration signed on the margins of the Warsaw Summit this July 16.

NATO Deputy Secretary General: Defence and dialogue go hand in hand

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller stressed the importance of building confidence with Russia at the Berlin Policy Forum in Germany on Tuesday (29 November 2016). Participating in a panel discussion on ‘Russia and Europe: Between Confrontation, Coexistence and Cooperation’, Ms. Gottemoeller outlined the Alliance’s dual-track approach of strong defence and dialogue with Russia.

NATO and the Republic of Moldova strengthen partnership

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip at NATO Headquarters on Tuesday (29 November 2016), for talks on how to strengthen the partnership between the Alliance and Chisinau. The two leaders signed an agreement to pave the way for the establishment of a NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau. This civilian office will help promote practical cooperation and serve as a platform for dialogue.
