NATO Secretary General attends meeting of Global Coalition to Counter ISIL

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg attended a meeting of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL at the US Department of State on Wednesday (22 March 2017). Discussions focused on the military campaign against ISIL and progress on the liberation and stabilisation of Raqqa and Mosul. On the anniversary of the Brussels attacks, nations reaffirmed their shared mission to defeat ISIL.

Secretary General thanks Denmark for its strong commitment to NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ended a two day visit to Denmark on Friday (17 March 2017) with talks with Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Mr. Stoltenberg thanked the Prime Minister for his country’s continued commitment to the Alliance and the two discussed NATO’s adaptation to the new security environment. The Secretary General and Prime Minister also discussed fair burden sharing in NATO and preparations for the upcoming meeting of Allied leaders in Brussels this May.

General Petr Pavel met with the Spanish Defence Minister, Mrs. María Dolores de Cospedal, the Chief of Defence, Admiral Fernando García Sánchez and other high level military officials during his visit to Madrid, Spain on 15-16 March 2017. The Chairman thanked them for Spain’s continued and active commitment to NATO. The Chairman stressed how much NATO valued Spain’s presence in NATO Operations, Missions and Activities and appreciated the professionalism and expertise of its soldiers.

NATO is stepping up scientific cooperation with the Netherlands

Dutch scientists and experts offered their insights on new ways to address emerging security challenges during a Science for Peace and Security Programme (SPS) Information Day held in The Hague on 15 March 2017. Fruitful cooperation between the Netherlands and NATO’s SPS Programme has already led to exploring common solutions to security challenges in the areas of cyber defence, terrorism, extremism and unexploded ordnance.

NATO launches call for interns for 2018

As an international organisation, NATO is characterised by diversity. People from different backgrounds and cultures, work styles and ways of thinking work here. This is reflected in the Alliance’s internship programme, which offers opportunities in a variety of fields, including communications, finance, human resources, international relations, IT, law and political science. The 15th cycle of the programme opened on 13 March 2017 and applications will be accepted until 18 April 2017.

Defence Expenditure of NATO Countries (2009-2016)

NATO collects defence expenditure data from Allies on a regular basis and presents aggregates and subsets of this information. Each Allied country’s Ministry of Defence reports current and estimated future defence expenditure according to an agreed definition of defence expenditure. The amounts represent payments by a national government actually made, or to be made, during the course of the fiscal year to meet the needs of its armed forces or those of Allies. NATO also makes use of up-to-date economic and demographic information available from the Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

NATO marks International Women’s Day

“An organisation, society or country can only succeed if it uses the full potential of all of its members – men and women,” said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, marking the occasion of International Women’s Day on Wednesday (8 March 2017). He stressed that equal participation of men and women is a core security requirement, essential to the resilience of societies, to the effectiveness of NATO forces and to achieving and preserving peace.
