New collections available on NATO Archives online

The NATO Archives is excited to announce a second wave of declassified and publicly disclosed NATO documents for its popular web-based research tool NATO Archives Online (http://archives.nato.int). Over 23000 new documents have been uploaded to NATO Archives Online covering three major areas previously unavailable on the web.

1990 Summit: a turning point in 'East-West' relations

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 led to radical changes to security in Europe. As early as July 1990, NATO leaders discussed the impact of this historic event at the London Summit, outlining proposals for developing cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. “(…) The Cold War belongs to history, our Alliance is moving from confrontation to co-operation” stated NATO Secretary General Manfred Wörner in his opening comments.

NATO Archives marks enlargement anniversaries at the Foreign Ministers meeting

On April 1st, the NATO Foreign Ministers celebrated the accession anniversaries of twelve countries: 15 years for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland; 10 years for Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia; 5 years for Albania and Croatia. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen highlighted the event with a speech that commemorated the enlargements, reaffirmed NATO’s Open Door Policy and emphasized that the alliance remains dedicated to freedom and security. The Foreign Ministers of the twenty-eight NATO countries and the Secretary General issued a jointly signed statement to conclude the occasion. The original signed statement has been deposited to the NATO Archives.
