Afghan and Central Asian Members of Parliament work to strengthen cooperation

On 5 July 2012, a group of 14 parliamentarians from Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan visited NATO Headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The visit - organised by NATO Public Diplomacy Division - was part of a long-standing programme of cooperation in the field of public diplomacy between the Alliance and these countries. The group met with representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, as well as with members of the International Staff, including Ambassador Dirk Brengelmann, Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy.

NATO-funded programme helps Kyrgyz military personnel transition to civilian life

Helping military personnel facing redundancy adapt to civilian life is a constant problem faced by the Kyrgyz Armed Forces as they undergo reform. With skills that do not always easily translate into the civilian labour market, life after the armed services can be difficult for those searching for a job. However, a three year-old NATO-funded retraining and resettlement programme is helping to mitigate the socio-economic consequences of the defence restructuring.

Central Asian parliamentarians visit NATO

NATO's cooperation with Central Asian republics and the NATO-led efforts to stabilise Afghanistan were high on the agenda during a visit paid by a group of members of parliament from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan to NATO Headquarters in Brussels on 30 and 31 May.

Senior NATO official holds high-level meetings in Central Asia

James Appathurai, the Deputy Assistant Secretary General (DASG) for Political and Security Policy and NATO Special Representative for Central Asia visited Kyrgystan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan from 10 to 13 May, his first visit to the region since taking up his new post.

Secretary General welcomes the President of Kyrgyzstan at NATO Headquarters

In a meeting with the President Roza Otunbayeva on Monday 28th February 2011, the NATO Secretary General said that Allies will continue supporting a democratic transition in Kyrgyzstan.

Retraining programme launched in the Kyrgyz Republic

At a ceremony on 3 December, a first NATO-supported retraining programme for released military personnel was launched in Bishkek. The aim is to help the Kyrgyz Republic to tackle the socio-economic consequences of the restructuring of its armed forces.

First NATO depository library opens in Kyrgyzstan

NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Central Asia, Robert Simmons, inaugurated the first NATO Depositary library in the Kyrgyz Republic at the Diplomatic Academy of Bishkek on 2 February. It is the third NATO depository library in Central Asia, the other two being in Almaty and Astana, Kazakhstan.
