NATO’s relations with Ukraine

The formal basis for NATO-Ukraine relations is the 1997 Charter on a Distinctive Partnership, which established the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC). An Intensified Dialogue on Ukraine's membership aspirations and related reforms was launched in 2005. Under President Viktor Yanukovych’s current government, Ukraine is not presently seeking membership of the Alliance, however practical cooperation with NATO continues in a wide range of areas.

World’s largest demilitarization project boosts industry in Ukraine

The NATO-Partnership Trust Fund project for the destruction of conventional munitions, small arms, light weapons and landmines in Ukraine is making significant progress, but future funding remains a challenge. The project, which was the focus of a conference in the capital Kyiv on 8 April, is helping address the potential threat posed by Ukraine’s large stocks of old and obsolete weapons and ammunition accumulated since the Second World War. It has also boosted Ukrainian industry and created 110 jobs.

Ministers reinforce cooperation in NATO-Ukraine Commission

NATO and Ukraine reinforced their cooperation at a meeting of defence ministers in the NATO-Ukraine Commission on Friday 22 February. “NATO and Ukraine are key security partners. For many years, Ukraine has made substantial and very welcome contributions to all major NATO-led operations, including our engagement in Afghanistan,” said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who chaired the meeting.
