NATO Archives discloses collection of ''Private Papers'' of former NATO Secretary General Joseph Luns

The Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to NATO contacted the NATO Archives to request the declassification and public disclosure of NATO documents that were included among the private papers of former Secretary General Joseph M.A.H. Luns. These papers were donated by the Luns family to the Dutch National Archives in the Hague (www.gahetna.nl)

Over the past decade, the NATO Archives, the SHAPE Historical Office, SHAPE Registry and Records, and SHAPE Information and Knowledge Management have been working together to digitize large numbers of microfilm reels containing classified historical documents originating from SHAPE.

NATO Archives presents ''NATO’s First Enlargement''

On 18 June 2012, the NATO Archives celebrated the 60th anniversary of the accession of Greece and Turkey to the North Atlantic Treaty with a commemorative exhibition titled ‘NATO’s First Enlargement: Greece and Turkey 1952’. The exhibition focused on the accession ceremony and its surrounding events, using publicly disclosed NATO documents to present the historical moment in its formal, political, strategic and public diplomacy contexts.

According to the NATO approved policy on Public disclosure, documents of thirty years old or older which have been declassified and approved for public disclosure are available for consultation, except those containing information that could affect the privacy of an individual or confidential commercial information.

NATO Documents Series

The records available for consultation consist of chronological sets of documents issued by the International Staff and the NATO Military Authorities between 1949 and 1974.
