1990 Summit: a turning point in 'East-West' relations

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 led to radical changes to security in Europe. As early as July 1990, NATO leaders discussed the impact of this historic event at the London Summit, outlining proposals for developing cooperation with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. “(…) The Cold War belongs to history, our Alliance is moving from confrontation to co-operation” stated NATO Secretary General Manfred Wörner in his opening comments.

NATO Secretary General sends season’s greetings to Allied troops

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Allied troops serving under the NATO flag in different missions in a video message released on Thursday (18 December 2014). Mr. Stoltenberg spoke of his admiration for the personnel serving the Alliance from Afghanistan to the Balkans, and from Turkey to the Baltics. “This holiday season, we reflect how fortunate we are to enjoy the benefits of peace and freedom,” the NATO Secretary General said. “We give our thanks to all those who keep us safe”, he added.

NATO pays tribute to ISAF mission, as new chapter opens in relations with Afghanistan

The North Atlantic Council met for the last time in the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) format today (17 December). “For well over a decade, our nations stood shoulder to shoulder in the largest coalition for peace and stability in history. This has been a challenging mission, in many respects. Militarily. Politically. Economically,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said. “But we have met these challenges. Together, we have done what we set out to do. With a clear United Nations mandate, we have denied safe haven to international terrorists. We have made Afghanistan stronger. And we have made our own nations safer”, Mr. Stoltenberg added. “Challenges still remain. But today, Afghanistan is more stable and prosperous than ever”.

NATO Assistant Secretary General Stamatopoulos meets with the Prime Minister of Mauritania

The NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Ambassador Thrasyvoulos Terry Stamatopoulos met with the Prime Minister of Mauritania Yahya Ould Hademine in Nouakchott and discussed the partnership between NATO and Mauritania (15 December 2014). In Nouakchott Ambassador Stamatopoulos delivered a keynote speech at the NATO-Mauritania Conference to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Mediterranean Dialogue on 15 December 2014. Participants at the conference included Mauritanian parliamentarians, high level government officials, academics and media representatives.

NATO Secretary General hails Gulf partnerships in Qatar

NATO and Mediterranean partners discuss partnership, regional security with the King of Jordan

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the 28 Permanent Representatives to the North Atlantic Council discussed regional security and NATO-Jordan cooperation during talks with His Majesty King Abdullah II on Wednesday (10 December 2014) in Amman, Jordan. The high-level NATO delegation was in Jordan to mark the twentieth anniversary of the Mediterranean Dialogue, and was joined by the ambassadors of the seven nations (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia) participating in the partnership forum.
