NATO steps up counter-narcotics efforts in Afghanistan

Based on the request of the Afghan government, the Alliance will look at ways to enhance its contributions in the fight against narcotics, said NATO Secretary General at a press conference in Budapest, Hungary, on 10 October.
“Based on the request of the Afghan government, consistent with the appropriate United Nations Security Council resolutions, under the existing operational plan, ISAF can act in concert with the Afghans against facilities and facilitators supporting the insurgency, in the context of counternarcotics, subject to authorization of respective nations”, he declared.
NATO’s operations in Afghanistan were discussed during a two-day informal meeting of Defence Ministers with invitees (Albania and Croatia) and non-NATO ISAF contributing nations in Budapest, Hungary, on 9-10 October 2008.
