Brussels hosts NATO-Industry Forum 2016

The NATO-Industry Forum is the primary venue for strategic dialogue with the defence and security industry on NATO capability planning and development. Sponsored by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Forum is co-organised by Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Denis Mercier, and NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment Camille Grand.

NATO commemorates the 1956 Hungarian Revolution

NATO Allies and partners marked the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution on Monday (24 October 2016) with a special exhibition at NATO Headquarters. The exhibition was opened by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, his father, Thorvald Stoltenberg, who helped Hungarian refugees fleeing the invading Soviet Army in 1956, as well as Hungarian Ambassador to NATO, Péter Sztáray, and Hungarian politician and professor, Dr. János Horváth.

Monitoring dumped munitions in the Baltic Sea

A variety of chemical weapons and explosives left over from the Second World War is posing a significant threat to marine life and the population in the Baltic Sea. An international team of scientists helped to locate and understand this threat in the Baltic Sea through a multi-year research project supported by NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme.

NATO Secretary General: Ukraine is key to Euro-Atlantic security

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met on Thursday (20 October 2016) to discuss the security situation in Ukraine and how the Alliance can continue to support Kyiv. Mr. Stoltenberg highlighted that the Ukraine crisis continues to be “a black mark on the map of Europe.” He welcomed the efforts by leaders of the Normandy Format in Berlin yesterday, including the plan to create a new roadmap for implementing the Minsk Agreement.

Taking action on conflict-related sexual and gender-based violence

NATO’s Military Guidelines on the Prevention of, and Response to, Conflict-Related Sexual and Gender-Based Violence were discussed at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels on 19 October 2016. National representatives and subject matter experts from NATO, the European Union, the United Nations and non-governmental organisations gathered for the workshop, which aimed to raise awareness of the Guidelines as well as discuss progress and mark the way ahead.

New Civil Society Advisory Panel on Women, Peace and Security

Today’s complex security challenges make it ever more important to hear the voices of men and women directly affected by conflict and insecurity. NATO is breaking new ground in institutionalising sustained dialogue with representatives of civil society who work on conflict prevention and resolution, security and women’s empowerment, from grassroots activism to national and international policy. Convened by Marriet Schuurman – the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security – the Civil Society Advisory Panel on Women, Peace and Security met for the first time on 18 October 2016, in Brussels.

Concrete steps to boost Moldova’s defence capacities

Three projects aiming to build Moldova’s defence capacities were launched on 6 October 2016. Two projects concern cyber defence and the third seeks to promote the role of women. Developed within the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, the projects support implementation of the Defence and Related Security Capacity Building Initiative for Moldova.
