At the 2010 Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Conference held in Kabul on the 16 and 17 March, NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative, Ambassador Mark Sedwill, stressed PRTs’ role in promoting reconstruction, development and good governance throughout Afghanistan; a role that will be key to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) strategy over the next 18 months.

NATO warship forces pirates to release ship

Nineteen crew members from a small Iranian cargo ship, SAAD 1, were freed from their Somali pirate captors on 17 March after being held for 5 months. This followed an intervention by the Italian ship ITS Scirocco, one of five NATO warships operating off the Horn of Africa as part of NATO's counter-piracy mission, Operation Ocean Shield.

NATO airlifts African Union troops into Somalia

Under the NATO banner, the United States airlifted 1 700 troops from Uganda into Mogadishu and re-deployed 850 Ugandan troops out of Mogadishu that are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). The airlift, which commenced on 5 March 2010, was completed on 16 March 2010. Upon the request of the African Union for strategic airlift support for its mission in Somalia, NATO began providing this support in June 2007.

Clearing cold war remnants in Azerbaijan

Grazing sheep near Saloglu, in the north-eastern corner of Azerbaijan, used to be a dangerous task. In an area of more than five square kilometres, hundreds of thousands of pieces of explosive material lay hidden from view at various depths below the rolling, shrub-covered land. Now thanks to a NATO Trust Fund project, a large part of the area has been cleared, and one day soon, the entire former military base will be safe for the local population. More...
