Mr. Jens Stoltenberg chaired his first North Atlantic Council after taking up his post as NATO Secretary General on Wednesday (1 October 2014). “I am really looking forward to start and it’s a great honour to be the Secretary General of NATO,” Mr. Stoltenberg said arriving at NATO headquarters.

NATO Secretary General welcomes signing of security agreements with Afghanistan

I welcome the signature of the Bilateral Security Agreement between the United States and Afghanistan and of the Status of Forces Agreement between NATO and Afghanistan. The conclusion of these agreements opens a new chapter for cooperation between NATO, our partners, and the Afghan National Security Forces.

NATO congratulates Ghani and Abdullah on inauguration day

Ambassador Maurits Jochems, NATO’s Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan, attended the swearing of Dr. Ashraf Ghani as President of Afghanistan at a ceremony held today [Monday, 29 September] in Kabul. The event also saw the appointment of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah as Chief Executive Officer of the National Unity Government, as agreed by the two candidates on 21 September.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen says good-bye to North Atlantic Council and NATO staff

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who will officially step down as the Alliance’s 12th Secretary General at the end of this month, said good-bye to the members of the North Atlantic Council and NATO staff on Friday (26 September 2014), together with his wife Anne-Mette and his daughter Christina.

NATO and Japan conduct first ever joint counter-piracy drill

NATO and Japan conducted a joint counter-piracy drill in the Gulf of Aden on Thursday (25 September 2014) to test communications and tactical skills. It was the first such joint naval exercise between the two maritime fleets. “By synchronizing our activities and sharing information we stand a much better chance to secure the waters in the region and thereby keeping the sea lanes safe and secure,” said Commodore Aage Buur Jensen, the commander of NATO’s counter-piracy mission, Operation Ocean Shield.

Last AWACS return home from Afghanistan

1,240 missions and 12,240 flying hours later the AWACS fleet is finally home. On Thursday, 25 September the last AWACS returned to its home base in Geilenkirchen, Germany from Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan.

Addressing pollution-related security in Montenegro

Uncontrolled emission of air polluters and the release of poisonous gasses, especially in the context of a terror attack, pose a significant threat to urban populations. To address this risk, the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme sponsored a project entitled ‘Geographical Information Processing for Environmental Pollution-Related Security within Urban Scale Environments’ (GEPSUS).
