Brussels hosts NATO-Industry Forum 2016

The NATO-Industry Forum is the primary venue for strategic dialogue with the defence and security industry on NATO capability planning and development. Sponsored by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Forum is co-organised by Supreme Allied Commander Transformation General Denis Mercier, and NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Investment Camille Grand.

Secretary General: NATO is adapting for the future

NATO Defence Ministers discussed progress in strengthening the Alliance’s deterrence and defence on Wednesday (26 October 2016). Highlighting plans to deploy four multinational battalions to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, Secretary General Stoltenberg said this presence will send “an unmistakable message: NATO stands as one.” Ministers also discussed increasing NATO’s presence in the Black Sea region, Russia’s military activity close to NATO’s borders, cyber defence, and the NATO command structure.

Marriët Schuurman in NY: ''We can do better''

“NATO hosts what could well be the largest global coalition on UNSCR 1325,” said NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative on Women, Peace and Security Marriët Schuurman at a United Nations (UN) Security Council debate marking the landmark ‘No Women, No Peace’ Resolution’s anniversary. At the UN Headquarters in New York on 25 October 2016, Ambassador Schuurman discussed the need for inclusiveness in sustaining peace and explained recent efforts taken to cement the dialogue between NATO and representatives of civil society who work in conflict prevention, resolution and women’s empowerment. She also highlighted the importance of combatting sexual violence through the ongoing implementation of the Military Guidelines on the Prevention of, and Response to Conflict-related Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

Multinational acquisition group for Precision Guided Munitions welcomes ninth member

Today, Poland officially joined Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and Spain as the ninth participant in the Smart Defence project on the multinational provision of air-to-ground precision-guided munitions. During a signing ceremony at NATO Headquarters, Polish Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz and his Danish counterpart – representing the lead nation of this effort – signed an amended Memorandum of Understanding to mark Poland’s accession.

Defence Ministers mark progress in strengthening NATO’s defence and deterrence

NATO Defence Ministers are meeting in Brussels over the next two days (26-27 October 2016) to take forward decisions made at the Warsaw Summit in July. Today, ministers will mark progress in plans for a strengthened NATO presence in the eastern part of the Alliance, and in the Black Sea region. They will also discuss Russia’s recent military activity along NATO’s borders.

Stamp for NATO's new headquarters

For stamp enthusiasts around the world, NATO’s move across the road to new headquarters has not attracted attention, until now. On Saturday (22 October 2016), the Belgian Post issued a commemorative stamp depicting the new NATO Headquarters and its distinctive architecture. Today (25 October 2016), stamp collectors were given an opportunity to purchase this collector’s item, following a ceremony at NATO Headquarters.

Secretary General announces first NATO AWACS flight in support of the Counter-ISIL Coalition

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg briefed media on Tuesday (25 October 2016) on the agenda of this week’s meetings of NATO Defence Ministers, and announced the first NATO AWACS flight in support of the Counter-ISIL Coalition. On Wednesday and Thursday, Ministers will mark progress in establishing NATO's four battalions in the Baltic States and Poland, training for Iraqi officers, and cooperation with the European Union.

NATO commemorates the 1956 Hungarian Revolution

NATO Allies and partners marked the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution on Monday (24 October 2016) with a special exhibition at NATO Headquarters. The exhibition was opened by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, his father, Thorvald Stoltenberg, who helped Hungarian refugees fleeing the invading Soviet Army in 1956, as well as Hungarian Ambassador to NATO, Péter Sztáray, and Hungarian politician and professor, Dr. János Horváth.

Monitoring dumped munitions in the Baltic Sea

A variety of chemical weapons and explosives left over from the Second World War is posing a significant threat to marine life and the population in the Baltic Sea. An international team of scientists helped to locate and understand this threat in the Baltic Sea through a multi-year research project supported by NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme.
