Secretary General visit to Finland stresses strong partnership

NATO is determined to strengthen its partnership with Finland to better address security challenges to the east and south, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said during his visit to Helsinki on Thursday (5 March, 2015). Mr. Stoltenberg thanked Finnish Prime Minister Alexander Stubb for his nation’s close cooperation with the Alliance, calling Finland “one of our most active and closest partners."

Deputy Secretary General: NATO-EU cooperation is more important than ever

NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow has called for deeper cooperation between NATO and the European Union in the fight against new security threats. “We need to work together to manage crises, bring relief, and project stability beyond our borders,” he said. Ambassador Vershbow made his remarks in Riga, Latvia on Thursday (5 March 2015) in a speech to the Interparliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the Common Security and Defence Policy. “This is a critical time for the security of all our nations,” Ambassador Vershbow said.

NATO ships deploy to Black Sea for training

NATO ships assigned to Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) arrived in the Black Sea on Wednesday (4 March 2015) to train with ships from the Bulgarian, Romanian and Turkish Navies. This training will include simulated anti-air and anti-submarine warfare exercises, as well as simulated small boat attacks and basic ship handling manoeuvres.

Qatar hosts annual NATO conference on proliferation challenges

Participants from nearly 50 nations across five continents met in Doha, Qatar on 1-3 March to discuss current threats and challenges posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) including in the Middle East and Asia. The event provided an informal forum to exchange views on key issues ahead of the 2015 Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference in spring.

Deputy Secretary General calls for global partnership in fighting WMD proliferation

NATO Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow stressed the crucial role of global partnerships in combating proliferation in an address to the eleventh annual NATO Conference on Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Control, Disarmament, and Non-proliferation, in Doha, Qatar on Monday (2 March 2015). Mr. Vershbow warned that this is a “critical time for the security of all our nations”, citing challenges to east and south, including Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, and instability wracking the Middle East and North Africa. In light of such challenges, Ambassador Vershbow underscored the necessity of multilateral cooperation in fighting WMD proliferation. “National security requires more than just national efforts,” he said.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg thanked Allied personnel for their service and for their contribution to NATO operations and missions during his first visit to Allied Joint Force Command Headquarters in Naples on Friday (27 February 2015). “You are helping to keep our Alliance safe, and our world more secure,” he said.

NATO and Italy discuss how Alliance is adapting to face threats from east and south

Arriving in Rome at the start of a two day visit to Italy on Thursday (26 February 2015), Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg underscored that NATO is adapting to “defend all Allies against threats from any direction”, east or south. He added that the Alliance is implementing the biggest reinforcement of NATO’s collective defence since the end of the Cold War, in order to respond to emerging challenges, including ISIL and instability in the Middle East and North Africa.
