Chairman of the Military Committee delivers the inauguration address to NATO Defense College graduates

General Bartels, Chairman of the Military Committee, attended the graduation ceremony of the Senior Course Leaders class today, 25 July 2014, as well as the Change of Command ceremony, at the NATO Defense College (NDC) in Rome, Italy. In attendance were Ambassadors from participating countries and high ranking civilian and military officials.

Russia’s accusations - setting the record straight

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has led to Russia’s international isolation, including NATO’s suspension of all practical cooperation with Russia. To divert attention away from its actions, Russia has levelled a series of accusations against NATO which are based on misrepresentations of the facts and ignore the sustained effort that NATO has put into building a partnership with Russia. Russia has also made baseless attacks on the legitimacy of the Ukrainian authorities and has used force to seize part of Ukraine’s territory. This document, released by NATO on Wednesday (16 July 2014) sets the record straight.

Publication of International Board of Auditors for NATO (IBAN) report on NATO Defense College

NATO is releasing the first audit report of IBAN in its history. The North Atlantic Council (Council) decided that in accordance with basic principles of transparency and accountability that as of 1 January 2014 the reports of the International Board of Auditors for NATO (IBAN) together with any related financial statements should be disclosed to the public on a case by case basis. On 14 July 2014 the Council agreed that the IBAN report on the Financial Statements of the NATO Defense College for the year ended 31 December 2013 would be made available to the public.

Emerging security challenges debated at Global Media Forum

Cyber defence, energy security and scientific cooperation were among the topics discussed at this year’s Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum agenda in Bonn. Alliance officials engaged with an international audience to examine current security threats and NATO’s response to them. The theme of the forum was ''From Information to Participation – Challenges for the Media''.

NATO Secretary General highlights partnerships during San Francisco visit

A strong NATO with strong partnerships is “essential” to preserve an international rule-based order that promotes freedom, democracy and the rule of law, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in a speech delivered at the Marines’ Memorial Association in San Francisco on Wednesday (9 July), at the end of his visit to the United States this week. The Secretary General said the international order “is under threat” due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as well as other crises such as Syria, Iraq and increased tensions in Asia. He said that current global threats require a global network to deal with them effectively.

NATO mine clearance project advances in Azerbaijan

Jeyranchel, in northeastern Azerbaijan covers an area of about 62 square kilometres just along the Georgian border. From 1955 until 1991, the former Soviet Army used the site as a live-firing range. Unexploded ordnance (UXO) and mines remained, much of it hidden underground, threatening security and livelihoods.
