Secretary General previews NATO Defence Ministers meeting

Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg briefed media on Tuesday (9 February 2016) on the topics of this week’s Defence Ministers meeting. On Wednesday and Thursday, ministers will take further steps to reinforce the Alliance’s collective defence and deterrence. “Effective deterrence and defence requires both forward presence of Allied forces, and our ability to reinforce them quickly,” said Mr. Stoltenberg. Ministers are expected to agree on an enhanced forward presence in the eastern part of the Alliance.

NATO Deputy Secretary General discusses partnership with Moldovan Foreign Minister

NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow and Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Galbur met on Monday (8 February 2016) for talks on strengthening the partnership between the Alliance and Chișinău. Ambassador Vershbow thanked Moldova for its continued contributions to the Alliance-led mission in Kosovo and underlined that all NATO Allies support Moldova’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

NATO cooperation reaches fruition as new university opens in Armenia

The National Defense Research University (NDRU) opened its doors on 28 January, in Yerevan, Armenia. The opening of the NDRU is a product of close cooperation through NATO’s Defence Education Enhancement Programme (DEEP) and represents a major milestone in the transformation of the Armenian Armed Forces.

New NATO units in Eastern Europe gear up to support exercises and military planning

The Alliance’s six new small headquarters in Eastern Europe – the NATO Force Integration Units (NFIUs) –are off to a busy start. Inaugurated six months ago in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania, the units have since participated in major military exercises and welcomed new staff. They are on track to become fully operational by the Warsaw Summit in July 2016.

Chairman of NATO Military Committee visits Tunisia

General Petr Pavel stressed NATO’s commitment to Tunisia and welcomed the opportunity to discuss further practical military cooperation during his visit two-day visit to Tunis (27-28 January 2016). After meeting with Brigadier General Ismail Fathalli, Chief of Staff of the Tunisian Armed Forces and the Tunisian Minister of National Defence, Mr. Farhat Horchani, the Chairman commended Tunisia on its efforts to increase interoperability with NATO and its active participation in the Mediterranean Dialogue.
